The outcome of the consultations led to a decision that the majority of elected members supported, which was made ahead of recess. Over many years, we have seen a reluctance from the Conservatives to spend public money on protecting the public good.
At an event just before the end of the recess, I was reminded of a quote by the late former Presiding Officer George Reid, who, in a debate on the Iraq war in this Parliament in 2003, said that the first victim of the war was the truth.
I wrote to the Presiding Officer before recess and last week to ensure that I conveyed my willingness and availability to respond to any parliamentary request.

Clearly, we have honoured contracts where dates were in place—for both permanent and temporary staff—and we are now bringing those people into the organisation in a way that we never have before.
