That extension has now been granted—it was agreed while this Parliament was in recess—and this week provides the first opportunity since then to provide the promised update.
The cancellation of the GARL project saved £176 million.Of course there has been a cost, because land was purchased at the height of the market and then sold during a recession—there is no question about that.
The idea that we are now potentially entering another round of recession, with really high levels of unemployment and falling wages, is very difficult for workers to accept, given that we are only at the tail end of the previous recession.
