Official Report Meeting date: 8 December 2004

Plenary, 08 Dec 2004

It is right that we raise such concerns in this debate.Another concern of mine is that Gordon Brown, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, has announced that 2005 will be the year of the volunteer.
Official Report Meeting date: 2 December 2004

Plenary, 02 Dec 2004

It would have been helpful if Mike Rumbles had given us some practical examples relating to domestic abuse services—not services for rape victims and others—which might have been developed in response to his point.A heavy dose of perspective and attention to practical issues is required if the discussion is to cast light on policy options. Will Robert Brown...

Plenary, 26 Nov 2003

There are differences between Gordon Brown, Jack Straw and the Prime Minister on the issue, but I am delighted, if ministers have now read the fine print of the constitution and have seen the dangers, that they will sign up to if they adopt it.One of the main reasons for drawing up the new constitution was to allow the 10 new nations to enter.

This is a timely debate following our debate on the passage of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Bill, during which the subject of suicide was occasionally touched on.In speaking to the motion today, I must first thank Mark O'Dowd and Gavin Brown of Glasgow Junior Chamber of Commerce, who first proposed a national suicide helpline called "pr...

It being national poetry day, I feel that I should have brought at least one poem by George Mackay Brown or Sorley Maclean, but I neglected to do so.I was born in Thurso and have lived in the Orkneys, so I am always glad to receive invitations to return to the Highlands, even if they are similar to the last two that I received—to open a sewage works and to ...
Official Report Meeting date: 17 April 2002

Social Justice Committee, 17 Apr 2002

To answer Mr Brown's question, perhaps we are slightly further back than he hoped, but the issue is certainly live and work is being done on it.
Official Report Meeting date: 29 November 2001

Plenary, 29 Nov 2001

I congratulate Mike Rumbles on securing the debate and I congratulate Robert Brown on reminding us that the debate is not really about digital hearing aids, but about people and how the lack of appropriate, available and affordable technology affects their lives.

In reply to a parliamentary question on the subject, the department explained on 18 October:"Executive officials … met with COALPRO on 23 February and 20 April 2001 … The members of COALPRO who attended included individuals from Scottish Coal, I and H Brown, ATH Resources and J Fenton and Sons (Contractors) Ltd."
Official Report Meeting date: 7 February 2001

Like everyone else, I put on record the thanks that we owe the many volunteers for their work and, as Robert Brown said, for their contribution to the Parliament.I will address the substantial issues.
Official Report Meeting date: 24 January 2001

Plenary, 24 Jan 2001

I do not usually praise the council, but it does a marvellous job with the museums. As Robert Brown mentioned, artefacts sometimes languish because there is not time to find out exactly what is in storage—and an audit has not been done—and to exhibit them.
