Among charities, Oxfam in particular has pioneered support for the producers of goods. The make poverty history campaign—led by Hilary Benn and Gordon Brown, by Des McNulty in this Parliament and by others—is helping to accelerate the momentum behind fair trade as a means of giving genuine economic choice to producers in their own towns and villages: jobs, n...

As we have already heard this afternoon, in the Scottish budget fairytale Peter Pan McConnell is the beneficiary of good fairy Tinkerbell Brown's block grant. Members will recall that Mr Darling had only a bit part in the Peter Pan story.

As the bill is now nearing the end of its passage, this is the appropriate time to consider a Sewel motion on it.Some time ago, my colleague, the vice-convener of the Liberal Democrats, Robert Brown, wrote to the Lord Chancellor suggesting that much of the apprehension over a supreme court diluting the Scottish legal system could be overcome by establishing...

It being national poetry day, I feel that I should have brought at least one poem by George Mackay Brown or Sorley Maclean, but I neglected to do so.I was born in Thurso and have lived in the Orkneys, so I am always glad to receive invitations to return to the Highlands, even if they are similar to the last two that I received—to open a sewage works and to ...
Official Report Meeting date: 17 April 2002

Social Justice Committee, 17 Apr 2002
