I note that the news about the MV Glen Rosa was snuck out to Parliament in what the cabinet secretary suggested was the usual way—that is, it was announced the minute we rose for recess, as has become a habit for the Scottish Government.
Before I invite Jackie Baillie to contribute, I will say that I have raised the mesh issue, particularly with regard to the two reports by the late Professor Alison Britton, which were commissioned by the Scottish Government, and the First Minister offered to meet me. He did so after the summer recess. He, the minister and all relevant officials were there....
I trust that Parliament will support the proposals, which will allow completion of the SSI process before recess. That will ensure that the Scottish Prison Service, justice social work and partners have increased time to prepare for the proposed changes that will come into force on 20 October.
A joint action plan will be published prior to summer recess providing an update on the progress made by Scottish Government, in partnership with key stakeholders, to tackle nuisance calls as well as longer term actions.
On the committee’s timetable, it looks like we want to deal with the issue and report by the Christmas recess. Will you provide timely responses to some of the requests for further information?
I gave some serious consideration to my motion to annul the SSI that we were presented with prior to the parliamentary recess. It is not a decision that I took lightly—in fact, it is the first time that I have done it in my seven and a half years in the Parliament.
