Representing fishermen in Scotland, I of course share with them the discomfort that, when a fishing boat that is registered in Scotland goes out, it is covered by our regulations, but it can be alongside and in the same place off our shores as, for example, a Spanish boat that is working to different legislation.

Accordingly the Scottish Government has no power at present to license commercial fishing with electricity. Scientific studies have been conducted and these suggest that electrofishing could be more environmentally benign than other traditional methods, but this study did not address the broader question of long-term sustainability of razor clam populations under various levels of commercial fishing activity nor the medium to long-term effects of electrofishing.

I highlight to the member that, as part of the year of food and drink, the month of October has the theme of sustainable shores, with the focus very much on promoting our fishing, seafood and salmon, with sustainability at the core.
