Intelligence relating to the current fishing season was first identified in April 2019 and this was fed in to our regular risk assessment and tasking session, as well as being passed to the local Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB) patrol co-ordinator for consideration in planning future patrols.

We have always had an issue with getting evidence. Most fishing vessels comply with all the rules, but the occasional rogue element will decide not to do that.

I take the opportunity to reinforce the point that it is not only universities and large organisations based in cities that are driving research and innovation, important though that world-leading work is. In Shetland, more than 55,000 fish and shellfish were measured by scientists from the NAFC Marine Centre in 2018, and more than 1,700 students enrolled on 150 full-time or part-time courses, including students from Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Portugal and Canada studying an online course in fish welfare.

SEPA carries out regular inspections of fish farm premises and can check the means by which controlled waste from these is being kept, transported and disposed of by the operators of these farms and that the duty of care is being followed.
