Any application to produce or sell GM fish in this country would be required to pass the rigorous regulatory process, which we have in place, no such application has been made.

It has been left to the trade unions to think of ways in which we can address such issues for the benefit of our membership.The issue of DLOs is a different kettle of fish. Under CCT, there was a client-contractor split—housing providers were the client and the housing maintenance DLO was the contractor.

It is clear that the CFP has not been a success for UK fleets, partly because of the diversity of the types of fish in our waters. Stocks have not been maintained, fishing communities have not been preserved and young people have not entered the profession.

I attended the Fisheries Council meeting in Luxembourg on 16 June as part of the UK team.The council covered a number of issues relevant to the Scottish fishing industry. On the agenda at the UK's request was an item about the haddock fishery to the west of Rockall.
