Limited funds are available for emergency repairs to fishing harbours. My officials are aware of the problem at St Abbs and they have discussed the situation with representatives of the harbour trust.

I have already made provision for a licence relaxation to allow a number of Category C licensed scallop vessels to fish for west coast nephrops.I have also given an undertaking that resources will be available from the Financial Instrument for Fisheries Guidance (FIFG) to assist with suitable projects within the scallop industry.

There is a feeling that there is no danger to public health after scallops have been washed and processed, and that we should be testing them as they enter the food chain, which would mean that scallop fishing could go ahead. I understand that that is what happens in Ireland.
