S6M-05725: Maurice Golden: Sustainable Fashion Week 2022 – That the Parliament marks Sustainable Fashion Week 2022, which will run from 16 to 25 September 2022, and the opportunity it offers to recognise what it sees as the long- standing efforts of businesses, charities and community groups throughout Scotland to promote sustainable textiles and fashion; notes reports of the disproportionately high environmental impact of discarded textiles in Scotland compared with other materials; further notes the reported potential global impacts of fast fashion that is imported to Scotland through extended supply chains, including poor working conditions and negative outcomes for the natural environment; believes that a circular economic model offers the best opportunity to reduce those impacts through increased reuse of clothing and new business models of leasing and renting, whilst developing sustainable manufacturing using native fibres; further believes that such a model would encourage rural wealth creation through enhanced opportunities for fibre producers, such as wool farmers, and the network of makers using traditional skills, such as weaving and knitting, to support high quality manufacturing, and notes the calls to encourage stakeholders to build on existing best practice to establish Scotland as a global leader in sustainable textiles.
