Report on pre-budget scrutiny 2026-27: responding to long-term fiscal pressures - Social security spending

Social security spending The MTFS highlights the SFC’s June 2025 forecasts showing overall expenditure on social security increasing significantly from £6.8 billion in 2025-26 to £8.8 billion by 2029-30. Total additional spend reflecting policy choices in Scotland (over and above equivalent policies in England) rises from just over £1 billion in 2025-26 to £1.8 billion in 2029-30 according to the MTFS.1Scottish Government.
