Supported by: David Torrance*, Maree Todd*, Kenneth Gibson*, Jackie Baillie*, Bill Kidd*, Bob Doris*, Kevin Stewart* *S5M-00013 Ross Thomson: The Rubislaw Quarry Heritage Centre That the Parliament — welcomes plans for a Granite Heritage Visitor Centre at the site of Aberdeen s historic Rubislaw ’ Quarry; notes that the quarry, dating back to 1680 and once the largest man-made hole in Europe, produced over eight million tons of granite that contributed to almost 75% of Aberdeen s buildings, ’ bridges and monuments; understands that it was also used to build noted buildings and landmarks across the UK, including London s Waterloo Bridge and the Bruce Memorial at Bannockburn; ’ commends Hugh Black and the late Sandy Whyte for their contributions in bringing forward ambitious and visionary plans to preserve this important site; recognises the potential for such a site to attract visitors and to benefit the area's economy; congratulates the owners on receiving planning approval from Aberdeen City Council, and wishes the owners continued success in taking their plans forward.
