The recent college lecturers pay agreement is a strong package for college staff and despite the pressures on public finances, the Scottish Government has committed to making £4.5 million available from next year’s (2025-26) budget to support this deal. In the challenging fiscal environment we face, we will be taking tough decisions around Budget 2025-26, including decisive steps to ensure our public finances remain on a sustainable trajectory, targeting our funding and prioritising our spending. 4 Work is ongoing on the draft budget for 2025-26 and future budgets will continue to be set through the annual parliamentary budget Bill process and based on the latest available fiscal information.

28 June 2023: The Committee agreed to invite researchers, Police Scotland, the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit and No Knives, Better Lives to give evidence at a future meeting.
Liz Smith MSP responded by saying that this was a very well raised question as it is so important because there are lots of issues around the visitor levy. The power has been given to local authorities to decide whether or not they want to impose a visitor levy.
On fair pay, in about 38 minutes’ time, I will be sitting round the table with trade unions to try to hammer out a deal. It is to their credit and, I hope, the credit of all the parties involved that we continue to be prepared to sit down and get a deal to avert strike action.
