Supported by: Bill Kidd*, Joan McAlpine*, Richard Lyle*, Sandra White*, Emma Harper*, Colin Beattie*, David Torrance*, Bob Doris* *S5M-14090 Bill Kidd: UN International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons—That the Parliament recognises that 26 September 2018 marks the UN International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons; acknowledges that this date has been chosen as it marks the anniversary of a 1983 incident when a possible nuclear war was averted; understands that a conflict was almost triggered that day due to Soviet receivers misreading rays of sunlight reflected on clouds as three "nuclear weapons" being fired from a United States' military base towards the USSR; understands that Soviet military protocol required an immediate retaliatory nuclear missile launch; highlights that a missile launch however was avoided due to the thoughtful and measured actions of the late Colonel Stanislav Petrov, who, it understands, subsequently became commonly referred to as "the Man Who Saved the World", who bravely disobeyed this military protocol, and notes that this day was established to raise public awareness and mobilise international efforts for the total elimination of nuclear weapons.
