I welcome the First Minister's NHS waiting-time targets for 2005 of six months for in-patient treatment, 26 weeks for out-patient treatment and 48 hours for access to GPs, nurses and health care professionals.
A major part of the health allocation is the hypothecated tobacco tax of some £26 million per annum. That converts into just over £1.1 million per annum for this area in the current and next three financial years.
That was brought home to me last Friday when I visited a school in Aberdeen. Groups of children had to give a presentation on an issue and one little boy—he was in primary 6—talked about midwifery services.
I congratulate John Purvis on his excellent efforts. That is noted. When we visited Brussels earlier this year, we heard much about joint European support for sustainable investment in city areas and joint European resources for micro to medium enterprises, both of which initiatives are likely to be introduced in the not-too-distant future.
The minister will be aware that 130 new referrals were made during the Kilmarnock visit. Of those, 92 were from areas of East Ayrshire that do not have community wardens, including areas in the constituency of the Minister for Justice.
