I do not believe that Scotland can afford to spend its money on that. Compare all that to the cost of retaining Scotland's historic infantry regiments—the MOD expects to save only a few million pounds by disbanding them—not to mention what those vast sums could have meant for schools or hospitals.

It might be useful for the committee to compare and contrast the two councils and to consider the high level of unemployment, the impact of the Gaelic language and the culture of the western isles.As members have no specific questions, I ask the committee to agree to those extra visits.
If we say that quality has not been maintained, that is a big issue. There must be a comparator. We must judge whether the care is adequate compared to other units that deliver similar care.
