Functions 2 Function (1) The Commissioner’s general function is to promote and safeguard the rights and interests 10 of older people. 1 (2) In exercising the general function, the Commissioner is to— (a) promote awareness and understanding of the rights and interests of older people, (b) keep under review the law, policy and practice relating to the rights and interests of older people with a view to assessing the adequacy and effectiveness of such 15 law, policy and practice, (c) promote best practice by service providers, (d) promote the use of the skills and experience of older people, and (e) promote, commission, undertake and publish research on matters relating to the rights and interests of older people. 20 3 United Nations Principles In exercising functions under this Act, the Commissioner must have regard to the provisions of the United Nations Principles for Older Persons adopted by the General Assembly Resolution 46/91 of 16 December 1991.
