Culture and Tourism (Midlothian and East Lothian) To ask the Scottish Government what recent steps it has taken to promote culture and tourism in Midlothian and East Lothian.
(S5O-00531) Tourism, as one of our key growth sectors, is vital to all of Scotland’s economy. The latest Scottish Government statistics for the Highlands and Islands show an increase in tourism employment and gross value added, together with an increase in visitor numbers and spend.

This reflects the success of both SDI international, which has worked hard to explore new markets for Scottish products, and Visit Scotland which has effectively promoted Scotland as an attractive destination for tourists.
The SFC notes that the capital budget is flat in nominal terms between the latest position for 2022-23 (at December 2022) and the 2023-24 Budget, reflecting a real terms cut of £185 million.
Before I answer questions, I will make two key points on the contents of the bill. The question why we need a new code when the Government could just revise and promote the old one has been raised.
As I said, the SPS has established a new strategy for women who are in custody, which will support the development of women’s agency through opportunities to make choices.

The Scottish Government recommends awaiting the conclusion of its internal review of its use of impact assessments, expected to conclude by January 2027, before new assessments are introduced, and to “avoid new duties and assessments being a default response to implementation gaps”.
