The Opposition cannot ask for a date when we are in the process of trying to get the procedures in place. Earlier this year, I saw a dig at the Scottish Government in the Evening Times by one of Mr Smyth’s colleagues, who seemed keen to criticise the Government, which is committed to getting it right when it comes to the new powers.
If people have not thought about the issue previously, it is very difficult to get them to think about it and to reach a conclusion that is positive when they are shocked and grieving and the issue is coming to them absolutely new.
The Committee will be keen next year to understand the impact of this new system. The Committee notes that new system has precipitated an extension to the deadline for appeals this year.
