It would be helpful to have a standing adviser on the budget. As a new member of the Justice 2 Committee when it was reconstituted last year, I found it helpful to have Professor Main to advise us on the budget, as he had a degree of knowledge and expertise that many committee members did not have.

We have decided to take evidence from the Minister for Transport and from the Strategic Rail Authority on developments in the rail network in Scotland and we could ask them questions not only about Laurencekirk station, but about the principle of reopening services.One of our predecessor committees—the Transport and the Environment Committee—indicated in its inquiry into the rail industry that new stopping services should be considered as part of improvements to the rail network.

I thank the minister for that good news about the fall in crime rates. Does she agree that, although the 0.5 per cent rise in the number of children referred to the children's reporter over the past three years is disappointing, the situation is certainly not as bad as has been reported in some sections of the media?
