Official Report Meeting date: 1 December 2005

Plenary, 01 Dec 2005

Resolved, That the Parliament supports the Scottish Executive in its efforts to negotiate the best possible outcome from the EU Fisheries Council in December 2005, an outcome that delivers sustainable fisheries and a fair deal for Scotland's fishermen and fishing communities and calls on the Scottish Executive, beyond the December Council, to press for changes to the operation of the Common Fisheries Policy to support healthier and more sustainable seas through a broad range of measures complementary or alternative to total allowable catches, including marine protected areas, regeneration zones and on-board observers, and to consider bycatch quotas to address discards and the innovative use of European fisheries funds to support profitability and sustainability.

Official Report Meeting date: 23 November 2006

Plenary, 23 Nov 2006

The public expects the Parliament to address the difficult issue that, while the people who commit serious crimes must go to prison, must not be released early and must be supervised when they are released into the community, we must also ensure that we have a priso...

Plenary, 23 Nov 2006

I am in favour of the member's general suggestion, which would protect the geographical status of the product concerned and ensure that consumers get what they think they have paid for. I point out that we make grants totalling £45 million available to local food producers to ensure that the local supply chain is supported. That said, we need to understand t...

Public Petitions Committee, 15 Nov 2006

The petitioner could perhaps argue that elected councillors have made choices to spend money that might have gone into such maintenance on other services, such as education or social work.COSLA rightly highlights the arguably unsatisfactory situation with regard to the activities of what we usually call the public utilities, most of which are now privatised. COSLA will also point to what it regards as historical underfunding of this element of local government funding.

I am sure that Mr MacAskill will continue to make those points in responding to the proposals in our paper and engaging in the work that is to come.

I appreciate that comment.I want to make a serious point about members who make accusations in the chamber about the law being broken.
