All members of the committee had an e-mail circulated to them prior to this meeting asking for their comments on the petition. At this stage it is probably best for us simply to note the petition and the continuing work that is being done by a fellow committee of the Parliament.
It is true to say that she is considering how best to support target groups. There has not yet been any decision on whether specific targets should be set for those groups as it is difficult to determine how to define the groups themselves, never mind the targets for them.

As a matter of general policy, there may be circumstances in which it is appropriate to close a rural school, but those circumstances are best judged in the first instance at local level.
As I indicated in my answer to Mr Raffan's first question, it is the job of local health authorities to determine how best the needs of local populations can be met.
If a decision to plough up the field is made, the minister should make it on the basis of the best scientific advice and not on our recommendation as a committee of lay people.
