European and External Relations Committee, 13 Feb 2007

However, taking into account both the nature of the paper and Bruce Crawford's point, I would not go to the stake over it.

I am sure that there will be many matters for debate in the run-up to the election. For the sake of clarity, I will say that at no time did I say that the sub-committee had been "a waste of time". My point was that holding a committee meeting is not the way to tackle climate change.

Since the locations that are available are so similar, has the minister evaluated why that is the case? What has he done to reach the point at which Scotland can offer financial and payment-in-kind incentives comparable to those that are available across the Irish sea?

Much as it pains me to agree with Phil Gallie on anything, he has hit on an important point. COSLA will also point to what it regards as historical underfunding of this element of local government funding.

I am sure that Mr MacAskill will continue to make those points in responding to the proposals in our paper and engaging in the work that is to come.

I appreciate that comment.I want to make a serious point about members who make accusations in the chamber about the law being broken.

Can the minister give any indication of improvements that might be made on the A9 between Inverness and Thurso? Maureen Macmillan makes a fair point about the northern stretch of the A9 and about the fact that it takes significantly longer to travel by train between Inverness and Thurso than it does to go by bus or private car.
