Independent of Government and the NHS, the MWC visits patients, can undertake investigations of care and services, issue reports and recommendations, as well as providing advice and good practice guidance to patients and professionals.
In recognition of the Commission on Parliamentary Reform’s recommendation that Chamber time should be set aside to allow committees to announce the launch of significant inquiries, the Committee announced the launch of its inquiry on 6 November 2018 using this new procedure. The inquiry was formally launched the following day.
This was apparent in formal oral evidence as well as during the Committee's visits to Mull, Western Isles and Orkney as well as its various video conferences with islanders.

Community alarms and/or telecare have been in use in their most basic form for over 40 years, with the latest Scottish Government statistics showing that over 126,000 people are being supported at home with telecare.
