I hope that members enjoy tomorrow's debate, when we will conclude many years of work—that might not be the case for all committee members, but it certainly is for some of the staff and others—on producing a new members' interests order as part of the Interests of Members of the Scottish Parliament Bill.
Education Maintenance Allowance Payments (PE815) The next petition is PE815, by Ian Dalrymple, which calls on the Scottish Parliament to urge the Scottish Executive to review the distribution of education maintenance allowance payments this year to ensure a fairer introduction of the new higher payments so that all eligible pupils gain an equal amount.

That has now been withdrawn and the order has been relaid. The new one is in members' papers. It is suggested that, for completeness, it would be good to put the Executive's responses to the committee's questions into the committee's report.
It seems a pity not to write formally to the Executive for each committee meeting, but if you really feel that we should start the new year on a more agreeable footing, convener, then I have no profound objection.
My inclination is to avoid taking items in private when possible; however, the advice that I have received is that it is a legal requirement that we take items 5 and 6 in private. As we are a relatively new committee, it might be helpful for future meetings if we get guidance on that matter and take that guidance in public.
