Ultimately, we agreed that the line should go ahead, and we agreed with the promoter on key aspects such as the route, because the overall benefit of the line will be so great and we were persuaded that that should be the overriding concern.It is important to stress that we took the concerns of the objectors to the bill very seriously, as others have said. We visited many of the people who are concerned about the impact of the new line on them and their homes, and we visited them in their homes to get a clear idea of what the line would mean to them.

I also welcome David Mundell MSP, who has a special interest in the new economy. David Mundell was unable to attend our meeting last week because of family circumstances, but I am glad to say that everything is getting back to normal and he has been able to join us today.
