Each computerised record is subjected to a standard national validation, either by the originating Trust, or by the Information & Statistics Division (ISD) of the Common Services Agency (CSA).This validation undergoes regular review, and is updated where necessary to reflect changes in NHSiS management structures, and in clinical practice.

The Health Technology Board for Scotland is independent of the NHS Management Executive and decisions on its programme of work rests with the Chairman, Dr Angus Mackay, and his board members.The Rehabilitation Technology Services Advisory Group (ReTSAG), chaired by the Scottish Executive and including representatives from the five main rehabilitation technology centres in Scotland as well as users of the service, is continually examining the provision of aids and equipment and are currently looking at a number of areas of service provision which may lead to proposals for assessment being put to the Health Technology Board.Copies of the remit and membership of ReTSAG and the report of the Implementation Working Group for the Health Technology Board are available in the Scottish Parliament Information Centre.

As a first step, at my request the Chief Medical Officer is undertaking a detailed discussion with key staff at Lothian University Hospitals NHS Trust about the Unit's position.The Unit's viability must be a key factor in all future decisions about the location of tertiary paediatric services in Scotland. The framework for those decisions was set out in the report of the Acute Services Review, which advocates a coherent distribution of services amongst the existing tertiary paediatric centres in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.
