As I said, the regulations have been worked up closely with the British Association for Shooting and Conservation, which has welcomed their introduction as being the best deal on offer. Obviously, that organisation is best placed to judge such issues.

It is worth pointing out that, since 1995, facilities in Fife have benefited from around £6.5 million in awards made, including £500,000 for a synthetic pitch at Wade academy, £200,000 for Dalgety Bay bowling club, and £500,000 for the Pitreavie indoor athletics facility. Through the new opportunities for physical education and sport funding, Markinch primary school received more than £77,000 for a multi-use games area, and 26 projects in Mid Scotland and Fife have benefited from funding from the same fund.

It is only right that local people should be properly informed about those issues and involved in the debate; they should not be misled by local politicians making a bid to score cheap political points. The minister is well aware of the continuing public outrage at moves to downgrade maternity services at Perth royal infirmary.
