Scottish ParliamentEducation, Culture and Sport CommitteeWednesday 10 January 2001(Morning) The Deputy Convener opened the meeting at 10:07 Good morning and happy new year. Welcome to the first meeting in 2001 of the Education, Culture and Sport Committee.
The legacy paper can be used as a kind of briefing on the work that has been done, to inform new members and to bring members who have been members of the Parliament but who are new to the committee up to date with what has been happening.
I welcome the general support for the committee's recommendations. Having met Karen Carlton, the new commissioner, I am confident that she is a suitably independent and feisty woman to carry out the job that she has been given.
The committee could also ask for an indication of whether the RCOG is reviewing and publishing new guidelines in the light of any new research evidence, as it suggested it would do within two years of the guidelines being published.

The main item on our agenda is consideration of the Licensing (Scotland) Bill at stage 2, but before we proceed to that, item 1 is a declaration of interests. I invite Euan Robson, as a new member of the committee, to declare any relevant interests.
Item in Private Good morning and welcome to the Equal Opportunities Committee's first meeting in this salubrious new Parliament building. We have apologies this morning from Frances Curran and Nora Radcliffe.
Interests Before we move to our inquiry, we must welcome a new member to our committee. We are joined for the first time by Susan Deacon MSP, whom I invite to declare any relevant interests.
