As I hope the First Minister will be aware, the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service announced this week the closure of the protein fractionation unit—which makes blood products for the national health service and the Ministry of Defence—at Liberton, in my constituency, with the loss of 140 jobs.
We see the scale of the issue throughout Scotland, the United Kingdom, Europe and the world. There are rising problems—for example, the recent statistics on cocaine use—but there are also some encouraging trends.
