In a week when all of us are involved in other activities that might lead to a very low turnout in next week's European elections, we need to remember that 60 years ago this weekend people from all over western Europe and elsewhere, including North America, fought and died on the beaches of Normandy in order that we would have the right to vote today in Scotland, the United Kingdom and Europe as a whole. I hope that Scots remember that next Thursday and exercise that right, which was fought for so bravely by those who left our shores at that time.
