Official Report Meeting date: 3 February 2004

Local Government and Transport Committee, 03 Feb 2004

An STV count is more complex than a first-past-the-post count and will take longer, but that is not a reason for not introducing a new system. We need to trust the professionalism of the returning officers and their staff, who will do their best to deliver results as quickly as possible. We have heard that voters will be confused by the new system, which will result in a greater number of spoiled ballot papers.

I have given way twice and I must move on.Over the coming months, there will be much debate in Glasgow, quite rightly, about acute services reviews—the best pile of bricks and mortar, the best place to put beds and the best buildings in which to conduct health care.

Education Committee, 08 Sep 2005

I am pleased that walking distance is to be one of the criteria for new-build schools. Where I live, one of the latest schools to be built was constructed with a network of paths to nearby housing areas, which gives the children a safe walk to school.

The dates that have been suggested—to coincide with meetings of the Bundestag Petitions Committee—are 24 to 26 September or 8 to 10 October. The visit would include an examination of the way in which the Bundestag operates and, possibly, visits to two Länder petitions committe...

Public Petitions Committee 20 April 2010

However, I was struck by the petitioner saying that“To celebrate Israeli technology at this time”,which is what we will be doing with the display—although I will not be doing so personally—“is to collude in the routine testing of new weapons on the imprisoned Palestinian people, the dropping of white phosphorous on built-up areas of Gaza, the denial of spar...

Education, Lifelong Learning and Culture Committee, 10 Jun 2009

We felt that, in cases in which contact arrangements are not already in place, the identity of the natural parents is protected as, for example, a child under 16 cannot contact them. The new provision extends rights to children under 16, who now have access to more information.
Official Report Meeting date: 24 February 2009

Subordinate Legislation Committee, 24 Feb 2009

It is better to have a detailed suggestion as that gets around the obvious objection that the bill is for the next 40 years, in which time there will be new public bodies. If we really want to deal with the problem, it is better to propose a solution.

Plenary, 30 Jan 2008

Resolved, That the Parliament recognises the importance of ensuring that young people understand Scotland's and their place in the world, both currently and in a historical context, and in pursuit of this aim welcomes the opportunities for more exciting, engaging and relevant teaching presented by the Curriculum for Excellence and, in particular, the publication of the draft social studies outcomes and experiences by Learning and Teaching Scotland, along with the recent decision by the Scottish Qualifications Authority to include questions on Scottish history as a compulsory component of the Higher History examination; further recognises that without basic literacy and numeracy skills young people have difficulty accessing the curriculum, including history; calls on the Scottish Government to provide leadership to tackle literacy and numeracy in Scottish schools which will facilitate an improved understanding of history; however, emphasises that it is important that Scottish history is taught in a balanced manner, which encourages young people to evaluate the evidence critically and come to their own conclusions, and that it is taught in its rightful context, namely alongside local, British, European and world history, and further emphasises that courses must be of a high quality with teachers being supported by new...
