Since 1997 we have had 71,000 job losses in the manufacturing sector in Scotland. The latest growth figures, which came out yesterday, show that although the Scottish economy is growing—only just, but it is growing—manufacturing continues to suffer.
Lewis has drawn attention to the fact that change is taking place as we speak, so although our time scale is tight, I would hope that the beginning of April would be the latest time at which we would address this matter.

Figures on the number of jobs obtained through each of the New Deals in Edinburgh and East Lothian are only available for the New Deal for Young People, the New Deal 25 Plus and the New Deal for Lone Parents.
I have asked for other information to be sent to me. That was the only meeting of my visit that was in any way disappointing—it took place only an hour before I left so there was not much that could be done.In spite of the press coverage, I found the visit useful and helpful.
The number of social workersemployed by local authorities and the number of vacancies as at January 2006 isavailable at http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2006/02/06165620/0.It is not possible to state how many social workers will retire over the next fiveyears as this is a matter for employers and individual employees. Latest figuresfor the age profile of social workers are available in table 14 of the followingpublication http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Publications/2005/06/22115335/53364.Latest figures indicate there are currently 2200 people studying for a social workqualification in Scotland.
Our next meeting is on 27 April and so our deadline for consideration is 26 April. There is nothing to prevent members from getting more information for their own benefit, but the order will be reported to Parliament on 3 May.
