We have already announced, asa first step, the recruitment of 500 new officers over the lifetime of Parliament,and in line with the rest of the public sector, have set the police a clear 2 percent efficiency target to be reinvested to support improved retention and the redeploymentof officers to strengthen operational policing in our communities.We have not set specifictargets for retention or redeployment since decisions on the specific recruitmentand deployment of police officers are an operational matter for Chief Constables.Work is already underwayin this regard and Chief Constables and Police Board Conveners share our clear desirefor a greater visible police presence in our communities.Discussions have alsotaken place with stakeholders on the development of new opportunities to improveretention, and on the evaluation of the existing 30+ scheme.
