I am familiar with the Scottish Universities Environmental Research Centre’s work. Indeed, the member and I visited the centre this week, so I have recent knowledge of it.I am impressed by the centre’s work with Historic Scotland and a wide range of clients on carbon dating, on some aspects of which it leads the world.

(S3O-7980) The member is aware from my letter of 25 August to him that the Scottish Government is supporting a number of initiatives that make science more accessible to the public in Kilmarnock and Loudon.Extra funding of £78,000 over three years is being used to subsidise the transport costs of 15,000 people in schools and community groups across Ayrshire making a visit to the Glasgow Science Centre.The member is also aware from the letter that I wrote to him that although no applications were received for science engagement grants from organisations headquartered in Ayrshire, several projects will be accessible to schools, community groups and the wider public in Kilmarnock and Loudon.

I pay tribute to those who are constantly vigilant—not only staff in the gardens that Jamie McGrigor mentioned, but Scottish Government inspectors.Jamie McGrigor may wish to note that since the first finding of the disease in Scotland in May 2002, the Scottish Government has conducted nearly 15,000 inspections of host horticultural plants. Inspectors have made 2,344 visits to premises and have increased surveillance.
