Official Report Meeting date: 11 May 2005

Public Petitions Committee, 11 May 2005

We all agree with your aim of looking for recognition and dignity for Gillian.I do not think that anyone would disagree with the convener's comments about the local problem and the need to look for solutions to prevent such a thing happening in the future. At the very least, we must try to avoid the pick-and-mix approach to information and support, as shown...
Official Report Meeting date: 20 April 2005

Education Committee, 20 Apr 2005

I should mention that Lord James Douglas-Hamilton and I are lawyers—of different kinds—of more than seven years' standing, although I do not think that either of us intends to apply for membership of the tribunal in the immediate future. However, we should declare the matter in case there are considerations of interest.
Official Report Meeting date: 25 November 2004

Plenary, 25 Nov 2004

Resolved, That the Parliament supports the International Day to Eliminate Violence Against Women on 25 November 2004; affirms its commitment to eradicating all forms of violence against women in Scotland; acknowledges the significant funding that has gone into domestic abuse initiatives over the last four years; welcomes the more recent work of the Scottish Executive in setting up the Violence Against Women Service Development Fund and supporting Rape Crisis Scotland and the ten rape crisis centres throughout Scotland, and, noting the complexity of many of the issues involved, supports the Executive's decision to set up an expert committee to support the development of a strategic approach to tackling these issues in future...
Official Report Meeting date: 17 November 2004

Plenary, 17 Nov 2004

Surely we need to schedule a debate that shows that we as a Parliament acknowledge that violence in all its forms and against any victim—man, woman or child—is wrong, and we need a less exclusive approach when we choose such important topics for future debates. I am grateful for the opportunity to respond; I shall deal with each speech in turn.
Official Report Meeting date: 28 April 2004

Plenary, 28 Apr 2004

I hope not only that the right of the accused to a fair trial will be properly reflected in the future but that the bill will be seen as a continuing part of a process that fundamentally recognises the rights and needs of witnesses and victims.
Official Report Meeting date: 20 April 2004

Equal Opportunities Committee, 20 Apr 2004

Given that the Executive is talking about mainstreaming—which some might think of as downgrading—but has only just started to identify in some departments equality components relating to that, is it possible that in future years the equality components will not be specifically identified as they are at the moment?
Official Report Meeting date: 10 February 2004

Finance Committee, 10 Feb 2004

I suggest to the committee that that will become ever more important, simply because of the tighter spending restrictions that are likely to apply in the future because of the overall situation in the country, about which anyone who reads the financial papers will know.
Official Report Meeting date: 11 November 2003

Finance Committee, 11 Nov 2003

At the moment, the Crown decides when a case comes to court. To avoid wasting its time, in future the court will do so, on the basis of the full evidence, showing where the parties are at.There is provision in the bill for the court to dispense with the preliminary hearing if both parties lodge a written submission saying that they do not require it.
Official Report Meeting date: 24 September 2003

Plenary, 24 Sep 2003

Those changes, which were announced by Jim Wallace last December, include allowing charities to have access to a new legal form—the charitable incorporated organisation—and extending trustee investment powers. In today's statement, I have naturally looked to the future in setting out our legislative plans.
Official Report Meeting date: 25 June 2003

Education Committee, 25 Jun 2003

The Audit Committee has a retrospective function of examining whether mistakes were made, but for us it is a first principles issue. If a class has 27 children, in future, four of them might have special needs, or in any one year the figure might be one, zero or five.
