Opening Ceremony 2021

On Saturday 2 October, the Opening Ceremony for the sixth session of the Scottish Parliament will take place in the Debating Chamber.

Her Majesty The Queen will be attending, joined for the occasion by Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Rothesay.

The Opening Ceremony is a tradition started in 1999 to mark the beginning of every new session of the Scottish Parliament.

This year’s ceremony will pay tribute to ‘local heroes’ chosen from across Scotland for the part they have played during the pandemic and their communities both locally and nationally.

Those attending and watching at home will also enjoy a programme of music and entertainment that reflects the rich diversity of Scotland’s communities.

Details of the programme, including guests, local heroes and performers will be announced over the coming weeks on this page.
