Recognising Ward 4, Ninewells Hospital

  • Submitted by: Tess White, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 26 September 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10614

That the Parliament celebrates Dr Gavin Francis and the nursing, health care, volunteers and wider support team in Ward 4 at Ninewells Hospital, as an outstanding example of person-centred care, including to patients with myasthenia gravis; understands that there are estimated to be 12,000 people across the UK living with the rare neuromuscular autoimmune condition, myasthenia, which is a long-term condition that causes muscle weakness, which can be fatal; highlights what it sees as the importance of early diagnosis and the vital role of GPs and health professionals in being aware of the symptoms of myasthenia; calls on Scotland’s Rare Disease Implementation Board to engage with MyAware, the UK charity supporting people with myasthenia, to ensure that its healthcare professionals handout on myasthenia gravis is promoted and signposted for healthcare professionals across Scotland, in order to access resources and information to diagnose and support people with myasthenia, and highlights what it sees as this opportunity to raise awareness of myasthenia and the great work of MyAware in supporting people affected by myasthenia, raising awareness of the condition, funding research to find new therapies to reduce the impact of the condition, and ultimately to find a cure for myasthenia.
