  • Motion reference: S6M-07451

That the Parliament welcomes the news that Aberdeen-based charity Absafe has been awarded £15,381 through the Scotch Whisky Action Fund, which, it believes, seeks to invest in groups and organisations with innovative plans to reduce the impact of alcohol-related harm in Scotland's communities; understands that Absafe’s dedicated team educate schools, communities and businesses in the fundamentals of health and safety awareness through engaging and interactive methods; further understands that, as well as visiting schools and businesses, Absafe has an interactive facility, named The Safe, where the Absafe team and volunteers deliver engaging, fun and informative sessions that teach children about everyday hazards including road safety, substance misuse and fire safety; believes that this specific funding will help Absafe’s pro-social behaviour and alcohol awareness project, which, it understands, will aim to tackle the portrayal of alcohol in the media by talking with young people about television shows and films, and discussing how alcohol is portrayed in them, as well as exploring ways and giving them strategies in which they might handle peer pressure, and other difficult situations which involve drinking; notes that an estimated that 2,500 young people will benefit from the project, and commends all staff and volunteers at Absafe for what it sees as their crucial work.
