Congratulations to Emma Raducanu on Winning the 2021 US Open

  • Submitted by: Tess White, North East Scotland, Scottish Conservative and Unionist Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 14 September 2021
  • Motion reference: S6M-01205

That the Parliament congratulates Emma Raducanu on her stunning win at the 2021 US Open tennis in New York in two straight sets, where she was also the first qualifier in history to win a Grand Slam title; notes that 18-year-old Emma, from Bromley, is the UK’s first female Grand Slam winner since Virginia Wade won at Wimbledon in 1977, and that this was only her second time competing in a Grand Slam; congratulates the runner-up, Leylah Fernandez, on an extraordinary match; hopes that Emma's win will help to improve the participation rate of girls and women in sport, particularly in light of research by Scottish Women in Sport, which suggests that women are only filling 20% of the most senior roles in sports clubs and associations, and wishes Emma the very best for the remaining season and her future in tennis.
