  • Date lodged: Friday, 08 January 2021
  • Motion reference: S5M-23820

That the Parliament commends the 15-year-old sign language video star, Layla Cooke from Windygates, Fife, who has teamed up with teenagers from across the UK to perform the hits, Do They Know Its Christmas? and Santa Claus is Coming to Town; acknowledges that Layla, who started to lose her hearing when she was five, was named one of the most inspiring young women in the country when she appeared on the YMCA’s 30 under 30 list in November 2020; understands that her latest video was recorded and released on social media, and was edited together by Layla’s mum, Suzy; appreciates that Layla, who is an Auchmuty High School pupil, set up the LC Academy in February and launched weekly classes at Fife College teaching sign language to both hearing and deaf young people; notes that she has since moved classes online as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic; congratulates Layla for teaming up with the National Deaf Children’s Society in September to host eight Zoom workshops with young people with hearing loss; understands that the festive video comes after a spell working with the Frisson Foundation, which is a Fife-based organisation that aims to improve confidence through song and dance performances; appreciates that, instead of payment, the Foundation donated to Levenmouth Foodbank at Layla’s request, after which she then donated a further £500 through the sale of raffle tickets and a JustGiving fund, and wishes Layla every success with all her endeavours.
