Climate Strikers

  • Submitted by: Andy Wightman, Lothian, Scottish Green Party.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 18 March 2019
  • Motion reference: S5M-16396

That the Parliament congratulates the young people who organised and attended the climate strikes across Scotland on 15 March 2019, including in Edinburgh; congratulates local authorities that recognised the role that such events can play in curriculum for excellence; notes that these strikes are part of a global movement started by Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old from Sweden, who has been on climate strike for 30 Fridays; is encouraged by the commitment demonstrated by young people across the world who are demanding urgent action within the next 10 years to avert climate breakdown and avoid a 1.5 degrees Celsius warming, and agrees with the demands of the climate strikers to decarbonise energy supply, keep the majority of known fossil fuel reserves in the ground, adopt new transport policies, change land use practices and challenge ideas of economic growth, all of which it considers are vital in order to avert climate breakdown.
