First Joint Unicef Gold Award for Greenhill Primary and Drumpark ASN Primary and Nursery

That the Parliament congratulates Greenhill Primary and Drumpark ASN Nursery and Primary schools in Coatbridge on becoming the first joint schools to be awarded the Gold Award from Unicef UK under its Rights Respecting Schools initiative; understands that both schools have a strong commitment to UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, which they have embedded into their school improvement plans, curriculum planning and lessons by making them a part of daily school life; notes that their key strengths were judged to have included, focusing on inclusion and building relationships and their innovative approach to raising awareness of children’s rights; believes that this was demonstrated by their march for their rights in Coatbridge in November 2017 as part of the UNICEF campaign, Out Right; understands that, not only did children take part in this with confidence, but that they also used the event to highlight the unjust way refugees that they believed refugees were treated; commends them for, it understands, having a clear understanding of the key rights concepts, clearly expressing the inherent and inalienable nature of rights and contrasting their awareness of the universality of rights with their knowledge of the lived experience of some young people denied access at home and abroad; understands that the finale of this has been the end-of-year summer play, which was written by staff and pupils, The Right to Greenhill;  notes that this depicted their rights-respecting journey; praises both schools on their hard work and determination, including their contribution to the community and support for charities, and wishes them all the best in their continued work.
