That the Parliament welcomes the 11th edition of the annual Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival (SMHAF) led by the Mental Health Foundation, which will take place between 10 and 29 October 2017; considers that, with its 300+ events in 13 regions across Scotland, SMHAF is heralded as one of Scotland’s most stimulating and provoking cultural events that uses arts, film, performance, music and literature to promote good mental health and wellbeing and to celebrate the creativity and achievements of people with lived experience of mental health problems; highlights the world premiere of theatre pieces including Hysteria! and One Mississippi, as well as Glasgow’s CCA showcasing award-winning films and special selections from the festival’s International Film Competition; understands that SMAHF creates a platform for people in Scotland to engage with mental health in public settings that can help to reduce associated stigma around mental health issues as well as promoting and advocating greater awareness of good mental health and wellbeing in society; recognises that the theme of this year’s SMHAF, Reclaim, is an opportunity for a nationwide dialogue on mental health and how people can recover and positively reclaim their experiences and lives, and acknowledges the work of the Mental Health Foundation in preventing and addressing the root causes of mental health problems in order to create a thriving, more resilient Scotland.
