Advancing Parkinson's Disease Research and Treatment Across Scotland

  • Submitted by: Julie MacDougall, Mid Scotland and Fife, Reform UK
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 05 November 2026
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S7M-01915

That the Parliament recognises the extraordinary work of both the University of Dundee and NHS Tayside in their continuing work in treating Parkinson's disease for patients across Mid Scotland and Fife; understands that the vital work carried out by the University of Dundee will help inform future medical practice across Scotland; notes that Parkinson's remains a significant condition in Scotland, with approximately 1,000 people affected within the NHS Tayside Board area and 450 of those requiring extensive mental health support; acknowledges that while NHS Tayside has 10 physicians with a specialist interest in Parkinson's disease or movement disorders, alongside five specialist Parkinson’s nurses, much more work is needed to adequately treat the condition in Mid Scotland & Fife and across Scotland as a whole, and commends the reconvening of the Cross-Party Group on Life Sciences which remains a powerful advocacy and policy tool in advancing research and development for Parkinson's treatment.
