One Year On from the Recognition of the State of Palestine in the UK

  • Submitted by: Paul McLennan, East Lothian Coast and Lammermuirs, Scottish National Party

  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S7M-01547

That the Parliament notes that it is now more than one year since the UK formally recognised the State of Palestine, reaffirming support for a negotiated two-state solution and the Palestinian people's right to self-determination; further notes reported concerns that, despite this significant diplomatic milestone, the situation on the ground for many Palestinians has deteriorated rather than improved, with continuing reports of genocide, displacement and humanitarian suffering in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories; believes reports from the UN that the conditions for a viable and contiguous Palestinian state are being increasingly undermined, including through settlement expansion and ongoing violence; notes the recent address by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to the UN General Assembly, during which he strongly rejected international calls for Palestinian statehood; recognises what it sees as the growing international concern expressed by governments, humanitarian agencies and civil society organisations regarding the future prospects for peace and security in the region; notes with alarm the publication of new satellite imagery and assessments showing the extensive destruction across Gaza, which many observers argue highlights the immense scale of reconstruction and humanitarian assistance that will be required; believes that the images serve as a stark reminder of the human cost and the urgent need for a lasting political solution, and calls on all parties and the international community to work towards an immediate and sustainable peace, the protection of civilians, the upholding of international law and a just resolution that guarantees dignity, security and self-determination for both Palestinians and Israelis.
