World Organ Donation Day 2026

  • Submitted by: Laura Mitchell, Moray, Scottish National Party
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 13 August 2026
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S7M-00854

That the Parliament marks World Organ Donation Day on 13 August 2026 and celebrates the life-saving impact of organ donations; pays tribute to the generosity of organ donors and their families, whose decisions give others the chance of a longer and healthier life; recognises that the NHS Organ Donor Register and National Transplant Register enable the NHS to identify and fairly match donors with people waiting for a transplant, helping facilitate almost 4,700 transplants in 2025-26; acknowledges that, despite this progress, there is still more to do, with donor and transplant numbers having fallen across the UK while more people than ever are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant; notes that, at any given time in Scotland, around 500 to 650 people are on the active organ transplant waiting list; recognises the importance of people making and recording their decision on organ donations, so that their wishes are known and can be respected, and encourages everyone to take the two minutes needed to confirm or update their decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register as a simple action that could help save up to nine lives.
