  • Motion reference: S7M-00640

That the Parliament welcomes the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in New Stevenston, honouring the life and legacy of Sir Alexander Gibson, one of Scotland's most distinguished conductors; recognises that Sir Alexander, known as the "maestro frae Motherwell", was the first Scot to become principal conductor and music director of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, serving from 1959 to 1984 as its longest-serving conductor; further recognises his founding of Scottish Opera in 1962 and his outstanding contribution to promoting Scotland's artistic and cultural reputation; notes that he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1967 and was knighted in 1977 for services to music; welcomes that the commemorative plaque was unveiled during what would have been his 100th birthday year, with members of his family in attendance and a special performance by Scottish Opera marking the occasion; acknowledges the importance of celebrating individuals whose achievements have brought distinction to their local communities and to Scotland, and considers the plaque a fitting tribute to Sir Alexander's enduring legacy and contribution to the nation's cultural life.
