  • Submitted by: Clare Haughey, Rutherglen and Cambuslang, Scottish National Party
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 11 June 2026
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S7M-00342

That the Parliament commends the work of staff at Asda Blantyre, including that of the store's community champion, Mary Sutherland, in supporting local football team Blantyre United FC; understands that the team was set up by former Asda grocery colleague, Alan Dunsmore, to support men’s mental health in response to his concerns about his peers during the pandemic; recognises that Alan’s continued commitment to the club, as coach, has fostered a culture of support and community for players and supporters alike; understands that Asda Blantyre organised a recent football fun event, which was hosted by the sports broadcaster David Tanner, where Blantyre United were presented with a cheque for £1,000 from the Asda Foundation, as well as football shirts and match and training footballs; remembers that, as Scotland feels the positive power of football during the pre-World Cup excitement, it is grassroots and community clubs like Blantyre United FC who bring people together week in, week out; commends Alan for his continued dedication in taking the club from strength to strength, and wishes the whole team all the very best for the future.
