Recognising New RSPB Report, Patterns of Persecution

  • Submitted by: Mark Ruskell, Mid Scotland and Fife, Scottish Green Party
  • Date lodged: Thursday, 28 May 2026
  • Motion type: Standard Motion
  • Motion reference: S7M-00171

That the Parliament acknowledges the recent RSPB report, Patterns of Persecution, which outlines evidence of the ongoing illegal killing of birds of prey and nest destruction; expresses alarm at the continued killing of these majestic birds, including in the Mid Scotland and Fife region, despite recent legislation to strengthen protections for these species; notes the reported figure that 64% of confirmed cases of bird crime occurred on land associated with grouse shooting; further notes with particular concern the recent persecution of golden eagles in the South of Scotland; commends the protection and conservation of these native birds, and expresses the hope that recent reforms and resourcing of Police Scotland and NatureScot will finally bring an end to what it believes is a blight on the national conscience.
